A Brief History of Morning Star
Morning Star Community Church began in 1982 as a Bible study of eight in the home of Pastor Scott and Denise Nelson. Over the years the church has rented a variety of facilities, moving seven times and adding more services as the congregation continued to grow. In 1990, property was purchased in Salem at the southern gateway to the city. The first phase of a “home of our own” was completed in the fall of 1996. Within four years the congregation had more than doubled. A second building phase was completed in spring 2001, in time for Easter services. Even with the new addition, our students still needed to meet off campus in local schools on Sunday mornings. Along with a growing congregation and active missions department, many ministries and outreaches exist to evangelize and to equip people of all ages for meaningful, significant service. The newest additions to our campus were our modular units, which were added at the end of 2008. These units provide our fourth and fifth graders a place of their own where they can meet to worship and grow. They also give us space for adult education classes on Sunday mornings, so the entire church family is on campus at the same time! Right now, more than 1,800 people call Morning Star their church home.
But Morning Star’s real history is not of moves and buildings. It is of lives changed and relationships restored. Our priority has been and continues to be to worship and serve Jesus Christ. Our fervent desire is that Morning Star be a worshiping family…growing in our faith, serving with our gifts, and sharing with the lost…all for the glory of Jesus Christ!
