The Lights at Morning Star

The Lights at Morning Star

Dates and Times: Every weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in December before Christmas, and December 23 and 24. 6-9 pm.

The Why: As followers of Jesus Christ, we know that He is the answer. John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” There are so many challenges in our community— COVID-19, the recent wildfires, and isolation from the things and folks we love. People are craving opportunities to get together and experience joy. They are looking for a way to escape heavy burdens, even if it’s just for a few minutes. People are looking for hope, and the need for that will only increase as we get closer to the Christmas season. We get to share with people the answer to their longings as we introduce them to the Light of the World this Christmas.

Purpose: For our community to . . .

  • hear and see the light of Jesus as we proclaim the gospel to our city.
  • experience joy from the light of Christmas in the middle of this dark season.
  • be introduced to the organization Salem Angles, which provides important services to families with foster children.

Community Cause: The Lights at Morning Star will also create awareness for vital community initiatives. This year, Morning Star is partnering with a brand new community non-profit called Salem Angels, whose mission is to actively support kids and families in the foster care system. We’re committed to coming alongside foster families in our community. You can read more about Salem Angels at nationalangels.org

Budget: Our fundraising goal for this first year is $100,000. The biggest expense will be one-time purchases for Christmas lights and props to decorate our large campus. An itemized budget is available upon request. Any excess money will be set aside in a savings retainer and used to fund future event expenses.

Outlook: We believe we will have at a minimum of 6-8,000 attendees this first year. We also see this event drastically growing in future years, drawing between 35-40,000 visitors each season within five years.

Story Overview: Morning Star Community Church is looking to create an engaging experience that will lift people’s spirits and bring our community together with something truly joyful—a family-fun Christmas lights drive-through! This is not your ordinary Christmas lights display; it will be inviting, inspirational, and interactive. Each visitor will embark on a journey with Leo the elf through mountains, lights, trees, and towns as he searches for the source of true worth and belonging. This creative sharing of the gospel will captivate and delight every person who travels on this magical adventure. The connection with Leo’s search for belonging and the good news of Jesus is clear and compelling.

There isn’t anything like this in the entire Salem area. We aim to provide a meaningful and joyful experience for young and old alike from the comfort of their own car. In this season of change and uncertainty, we want to present something stable, secure . . . and fun! The Lights at Morning Star is a positive way for families to make new memories and start new traditions.
